Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Rejuvenate Your System
More and more people who call the greater Los Angeles area home are entering their senior years. This is because of the baby boomer maturation phenomenon that is resulting in an unprecedented aging of the American population. The Social Security Administration tells us that they are accepting approximately 10,000 applications for Social Security benefits every day. This volume is expected to persist into the foreseeable future.
It is no secret that middle-aged people in places like Encino, Studio City, Burbank and Sherman Oaks want to maintain their vitality so that they can enjoy their lives to the fullest. However, there are certain inevitabilities that we all face as we age. Decreased testosterone levels will certainly be part of the equation for men, as their levels drop an estimated 1-2 percent per year from age 30.
This results in a host of changes in mood, energy, and physical health. If you have symptoms of low testosterone (see below), we may be able to help you. We’ve helped many people in our area safely increase their testosterone levels.
A low testosterone level can manifest symptoms that could include a lower sex drive, erectile dysfunction, low energy levels and undue fatigue, depression, loss of motivation, sleep disturbance, decreased mental function, weight gain, loss of muscle or difficulty gaining muscle, decreased strength, and concentration difficulties. Not only men but women as well, may suffer from testosterone deficiency and experience its symptoms.
Testosterone replacement therapy can be utilized to address the symptoms of testosterone deficiency. When prescribed by a skilled practitioner in the right manner, testosterone is not only safe but has been associated with improved health outcomes and reduced risk of disease, such as metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. While some have worried about increasing their risk of prostate cancer with testosterone replacement, studies have shown that people on testosterone have no greater risk of prostate cancer than does the general population.
Lifestyle factors go into play when it comes to improving your testosterone levels as well. For a mild testosterone deficiency, addressing stress, losing excess weight, making some dietary changes and taking specific supplements may be able to do the job. Others need more help in order to optimize their mood, energy, libido etc.
As a naturopathic medical practitioner, I recognize the fact that each individual is unique. It’s not a matter of treating symptoms with cookie-cutter remedies that are universally applicable to everyone. Although some medical professionals approach diseases in this way (i.e. one drug for one disease), naturopaths take a broader perspective, addressing the fundamental requirements for vitality and health. In this case, I do some detective work to find out WHY testosterone is low, and try to address those fundamental causes, in addition to giving testosterone replacement when necessary. Not doing so puts us in danger of the band-aid approach. Think of a boat with a hole in it, in the process of sinking. Do we scoop out the water while it continues to bubble up through the hole, or do we patch the hole?
